Educators are responsible for building a community in the classroom.  That is the beauty of Education.  In order to accomplish our expectations as teachers, we need to meet the expectations of our students.  Second Life is a very large virtual world made up of people of many different beliefs, compositions, forms, and expressions.  Is a shared simulation that provides a unique and flexible environment for educators interested in distance learning, computer supported cooperative work, simulation, new media studies, and corporate training.  This is a virtual education solution to amplify an existing curriculum or to create new models for engaged, collaborative learning in the classroom.  The advantage of using this program in education is that it is a free 3D virtual and allows your 3D-looking avatar to move around, creating a kind of interaction with learning objects and other people.  In addition to this, this program is an open source, so it can be modified by an instructor or community to create a simulated experience that might not be available in real life.  Using Second Life in education as a supplement to traditional classroom environments also provides new opportunities for enriching an existing curriculum.  Many universities and educational institutions like Penn State are already using it.   When you enter in their website for the first time, you'll start on Welcome Island.  This area is designed to quickly teach you the basics of the software.  The best way to learn Spanish is interacting with Spanish culture, customs, beliefs, and people.  Creativity doesn't have to be a solo activity.  Virtual Spain is one of the best features of this site because is a Spanish language community to help newcomers, including tutorials, daily classes, cultural activities, festivals, live music, and more.  Integrating this program in my Spanish classes it will benefit my students in many ways.  My students are going to experience a direct contact with other students from anywhere.  This fact will allow my students to choose what they want to learn in Spanish.  Some students are majoring in Spanish but others just need a diversity course.  Students majoring in Spanish will need to learn more about grammar, culture, customs, and beliefs.  Other students will like to learn more about medical terminology which is their field of study.  However, software has advantages and disadvantages.  My major concern is the endless access to the world.  Students may find themselves wasting their time trying to socialize with people.  Students can easily lose their focus and use of these tools like a Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube.  It is very important to clarify my students that the purpose of integrating this tool in my class is educational only.  I recommend this software to my colleagues that want to implement collaborative learning in their classroom.
